"French Toast"
The morning sun shone through the window on my workstation. Laid out neatly next to a metal bowl were eggs, milk, bread, and a few flavorings like cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla. I twirled my egg whisk between my fingers like a drumstick. I half considered calling out for Sarah to come downstairs but I figured I would let her sleep a little longer. She had a hard won victory with her soccer game yesterday, she needed her rest. Besides, it was Saturday. That would do. I caught my reflection in an art project Sarah had made using shards of a shattered mirror. I had been unaware of her project and she cut up her hands pretty badly. However, the angel she made was quite pretty, so I put it up. Examining myself, I was a mess. My hair looked like a crunched up bundle of hay, my old Nightwish shirt was more hole than fabric, and my sweat pants… Well, the less said about those the better. I cracked an egg on the metal bowl, emitting a satisfying ringing noise that echoed through the kitchen. I closed my eyes, just listening to that sound. When I did, a foul stench reached my nose. I opened my eyes, and green slime was dripping out of the cracked shell of the egg. I cursed, I had just gotten these eggs. I tossed the eggs into the trash and the bowl into the sink. After I washed my hands, I grabbed another bowl and another carton of eggs. This time it would be right. I cracked another egg, this time, more of that horrid crap squirted onto my shirt. Damn it! I threw those eggs away too, and grabbed another carton. I cracked another egg. Again, I was greeted by more of that rancid slurry. What the hell was with my eggs? Sarah wanted french toast, and damn it I was going to make her some french toast. I threw the eggs into the trash, and went back to the fridge, scratching at my wrist. I opened the door, pulling out another carton of eggs. I glanced at a picture hanging on the fridge door. Her mother had captured the magical moment yesterday when Sarah’s team won against Yellowburge Elementary’s team. Her big, goofy, toothy grin made pride swell up within me. Returning to the task at hand, I cracked another egg. Again, more of that disgusting slime. I threw the carton against the wall in frustration, before I scratched my wrist again. I just wanted to make Sarah some french toast. Why was this such an insurmountable task? I stormed over to the fridge and yanked the door open. I nearly crushed the next carton of eggs in hand when I pulled them out. I slammed the door shut. The angel fell. I yelped, and tried in vain to catch it. The glinting decoration tumbled to the ground. It shattered into dust at my feet, littering the floor with what could have been mistaken for glitter. Sarah would be so sad when she saw her art project was destroyed. I leaned against the counter, tears running down my cheeks. I just wanted to make french toast. Was that so bad? Was that such a sin against the universe that I deserved to be punished so? I cracked another egg. Again, more gunk. I yelled, smacking the carton against my forehead. I had to do this! I had to make Sarah's favorite breakfast. I looked at Sarah’s picture. I hadn't been at the game. I hadn't witnessed her moment. She had been upset with me last night, so I promised to make it up to her. If only I could get some eggs that weren't rotten. I pulled the door open again, filling my arms with cartons. One after one I cracked egg after egg, filling the metal bowl with more and more slime and eggshells. I brought my fist down on the edge of the bowl, spilling that slurry everywhere. Damn it! Now I would have to clean this crap up! I swore loud, and turned to the fridge to grab more eggs. The picture on the fridge showed nothing but a green field. I paused, scratching at my wrist again. Looking down, there was a long scar along each of my wrists. I looked around, my kitchen was clean, showing no sign of my temper tantrum. My work station was tidy. Eggs, vanilla, bread, brown sugar, it was all there. I half considered calling Sarah to come downstairs, but she had a hard fought victory against Yellowburge Elementary yesterday. She deserved her rest. When she woke up, she'd have french toast waiting for her. I twirled the whisk, and began to work.
