Today I presented an overview of the program we are building at @riceuniversity.bsky.social in science communication and public engagement. The symposium at OsloMet is part of an initiave funded by the EU, which sees communication by scientists to the public as being in the best interest of society.

…Amazingly, the telescope still works and I got to look through it to view a cluster of stars! No signs of aliens, sadly.

…We now know the lines were an illusion, and we haven’t found any evidence of life on Mars— but his ideas helped generate excitement for astronomy and contributed to the emergence of science fiction, especially about aliens…

This is the observatory where astronomer Percival Lowell made detailed observations of Mars in the 1890s. He was convinced he saw long, straight lines stretching across the planet, & interpreted these as canals built by Martians…
