That’s a big piece of what I was thinking of, but I’ve learned not to give it as an explicit example because then people get into fights about exactly which category/genre of music I’m talking about. Which is both a) beside the point and b) boring/stupid.

I think there are arguments you can make for things that are truly “American culture,” but many of them have starts in Southern black culture, so also not what they’re really thinking of.

Oh, I’m not remotely saying it doesn’t happen, just that unlike pretty much any other ill-advised use of some random employee’s time in a (locally) legal way, it is explicitly prohibited and there are whole mandatory trainings about it.

I was thinking my response to this thread was “my list of blood aunts and uncles was too long to need any more,” but then I got to this and it reminded me that my father’s aunts, uncles, cousins were mostly all just the same to me (without the great- or once-removed modifiers) and also a long list.
