Beauty aside, the selenium poisoning of critical watersheds is the far greater issue here. I could be talked into living with the visibility of the top of a mountain being taken off for economic benefit. Permanent pollution of the watershed and downstream communities is something else.

It's useful to note that this is metallurgical coal, not thermal coal. It's surprisingly rare, and one of the few things capable of getting hot enough for steel making. That's why it's in such high demand.

The problem with amending the LUB this way is that the question is always- Then What? What will replace it? What is the other bright idea to address the housing crisis in Calgary and across Canada? And the answer is always the same- Crickets.

Thermal coal? Yeah, no need and should be entirely phased out. But this is thermal coal we're talking about. That site will always be attractive because the coal is great and the logistics are perfect. Mining companies will forever look at Grassy Mountain and drool.

Not just claw back payments- but actively jacking up the provincial portion of the property tax, like in the last budget. Municipalities determine their priorities, not the provincial government.

Every cyclist is one more car that's not on the road. 'Underutilized'? Nobody ever says that about a sidewalk without anybody on it 95% of the time. Let's start scrapping those as well. After all, that's valuable and apparently unused real estate that could be used to put in another car lane

Old Dutch is based in Minnesota. They're frequently mistaken for a Canadian company because of their factories in Winnipeg and elsewhere. They're still smaller and less offensive than say Lay's, which are also manufactured in Canada by Canadian workers with Canadian potatoes.

Don't under appreciate the appeal of cheap cheese.
As much as I have disdain for Canada's dairy cartel, supply management works. I just wish they'd spend less time and money marketing to me on a product where I have no alternatives anyways. Just lower prices, please.
