Gordon Barrass, who debriefed Gordievsky on his exfiltration, later wrote an excellent book on the role of intelligence in the Cold War, “The great Cold War: journey through the hall of mirrors.” He discusses Gordievsky at length. Reagan was “very moved” by Gordievsky’s reports.

It is RAF Regiment, from an IWM film ‘The RAF on Combined Operations’. The weapons is a 20mm Hispano, not an Oerlikon

Difficult to see the shoulder badges, but they could be RAF eagles. If so, these are probably RAF Ground Gunners (predecessors of the RAF Regiment). The 20mm Oerlikon was in wide RAF use until the 40mm Bofors 40/L60 came into service in Europe. It was used throughout the War by the RAF in SE Asia.

Ministers are going to have to explain the new reality to voters. There is no way that even spending 3% of GDP on defence is going to compensate for the US going rogue (just look at what was spent in the 1970s) and there is no way that minsters can keep taxes down
