So when JWST came online three years ago, it had to photograph the nebula too. Not just for reasons of science, but for the satisfaction of a collective humanity wanting to know that it's still there, still dazzling, still unspeakably vast.

But Hubble wasn't the first to image the Pillars. Between 1949 and 1976, the Palomar Observatory in California was the most powerful telescope in existence.
