I know the place well - we used to on holiday there as children. I

Maybe not just one left but I’m inclined to agree. That’s from a golfer.

I could be wrong but I thought larger eggs came from older chickens. Was on some foody Tv programme.

That's pretty much how it was. Born in 1970 I was in flares as a kid but by the time I was a young teen skintight trousers were the thing. I learned how to take in trousers on my mum's sewing machine.

I read the Third Policeman recently for the first time. It's a very strange book. I'm still not sure what to make of it. Very Irish.

I hate to be too down on England as I live there. A certain percentage of people everywhere are areseholes but it's pretty high here.

They were probably English. I'd like to think the Scots, Welsh & Norn Irish are more polite.

We did too - been transitioning for a little while now. I used to work for B&T. We were very relieved when they sold my division off to a half-decent family owned company.

In Scotland growing up in the 70s it was a big thing. No trick or treat - it’s called guising. You dressed up and went around knocking on doors. You had to perform - song or poem or something and you were rewarded with sweets and nuts.

I'm astonished at your work-rate and the quality of it. You seem to write books as quickly as I can read them. Now on Shroud but you've probably written a couple since.

I have to read acknowledgments as part of my job. Academic mainly. I’ve seen a few where it was just an academic badmouthing colleagues they felt had stood in their way.

OUP actually quite cheap for an academic publisher. Routledge on the other hand…

What I do isn’t properly academic - I work in library supply - we’re an intermediary between the publisher and the library, usually academic. The book industry is notoriously badly paid.

They didn’t see my paycheck though
October 10, 2025 at 9:22 AM
Yeah it’s really more of the latter. I’ve had to give demos and a common reaction is ‘what a great job you have’
October 10, 2025 at 9:21 AM
It’s not that bad really. Not very well paid but fairly dossy.
October 10, 2025 at 9:20 AM
Be glad you don’t have my job - I have to catalogue them 7 hours a day. Which means I have to understand what they’re about.
October 10, 2025 at 8:50 AM
Ha ha. Ditto.

Had it on my desk this morning. Looked interesting. Simon & Shuster I think.

Erm, no it ain't.

Oh come on, they had the supposed ‘riots’ back in the day - made the national news apparently. That said, it’s fairly genteel for a council estate. I’m heading down the Blackbird for a few pints shortly.

Yes but it’s literature, therefore superior. I had a massive argument with an ex about this. It was a sign we were not meant for each other.

Reminds me of the night after my dad’s funeral. Walked into a pub with my mate Frank, both suited & booted. One of Frank’s mates shouts ‘oi Frank! Who died?’ He was mortified after we told him but it really cheered me up. Smiling now.
