A marketing person in the mid 1990s made up the term Honest Observer By Onset, but HOBO itself is not an acronym.
As a former longtime employee, the original data logger was called a Tattletale. The HOBO name came from what people used to do in the late 1800s and travel the country by train. In many ways that is how information got from one location to another. Onset had BoxCar software along with a StowAway.
