As far as I can tell as an out-of-touch middle-aged GenXer, the appeal of the “labubu” is that it’s a cute bunny but also mean AF, and therefore I think I can pass on this trend because BEEN THERE DONE THAT 30-SOME YEARS AGO (in the early days of Hot Topic)

This month’s record purchases: The Keening, “Little Bird,” Ratboys, “The Window,” Willi Carlisle, “Critterland,” and Symphony X, “Underworld.” Okay okay I might have a little record-buying problem, but these albums are all SO DAMN GOOOOOOOOD I can’t help myself

Will never ever EVER EVERRRRRR get over how super cool it is to see things like this in PR materials! Oh, you know, Tchaikovsky, Gendel, Bizet, et cetera.

(Let this serve as another reminder to come to Madison Opera’s “Opera in the Park” at Garner Park, Madison, WI, on July 19th!)

EXTREMELY PLEASED to learn this morning that, in the same way that I stick my tongue out a little when I’m focusing really hard on a task, Ham sticks his tongue out when long-distance stalking a robin out on the lawn

If you see this, and you're in the mood for this kind of thing, quote post with a beach photo from your gallery!

(This is the beach I grew up at, in New Jersey)

Was just going through my photos to clear up some storage, and stumbled on this screenshot of a post Megan Amram made five and a half years ago, and WHEW some things sure don't change, huh

Working on this with an excellent high school choir of low voices, and am reminded that it should be a very lovely 3-minute piece but unfortunately it lasts SEVEN EFFING MINUTES for no reason

It’s become something of a tradition that I send my wife off to work on Valentine’s Day with a HEARTy breakfast, & it brings me childlike joy so I’m sharing with you all! Heart-shaped frittata, sausage patty, toast, and persimmon slices. 🥰

VERY PSYCHED to start building this kit my daughter got me for the holidays. I’m hoping it’s variations on the “Te Deum” from TOSCA, but variations on 1812 would be a good choice too. Yes, this is a nerdy classical music joke.

When there’s a church interior as part of your set, the spike tape makes fingergun noises. Pew pew!

Okay!! I don’t have too many more things I made for the first time this year that I’m in love with, but this Cantonese stir-fried beef with tomatoes was a good one. And I made the best versions yet of: eggplant parm pizza, gumbo, and chicken & (sesame-scallion) waffles with (teriyaki) syrup.

I know everyone has different feelings about bumper stickers, but personally: why do I even own a car if I can’t put stupid shit like this on the bumper to make myself laugh? It’s frog.

It’s album release day for HOPE EATS YOU ALIVE, Madison Choral Project’s stunning album of my choral compositions on Parma Records, conducted by Bert Pinsonneault! Features the 28-minute title work for choir, cello, & percussion, a deeply humanist work about the Mexican-American border crisis.

a mellow morning with the boys

(Ham, Rye, and Swiss for those of you who don’t already know my cats. AKA Hamilton, Ryan, and Swisstopher, if we’re being more formal)

I love adding expression text after dynamics... SO helpful to distinguish between a sweet "piano" & an anguished "piano" for example! But I just tried to mark a certain "forte" as "elated" and now I can't stop laughing at the marking I almost added to this piece. It's not THAT kind of piece!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I arranged Billy Bragg’s masterful song “Between The Wars” for an EXCELLENT choir of teenage tenors & basses, & tonight I heard them sing it full-out for the first time, & WHEW I was not fully prepared to hear this words. Verse 2 especially had me in tears, sung by these brave young people. Oof.

All I want is for opera companies to advertise their big dramatic offerings like heavy metal record labels do. That’s all! Easy peasy. Huge prizes to the first ad that’s like “Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’: PREPARE TO BE CRUSHED!”
