I mean, I know the Santa Claus Parade was held last Saturday, but it still feels really early. Christians haven't even started Advent (starting four Sundays before Dec 25), which is the time of preparation for Christmas.

That ad was one of the few things that Doug Ford has done that I think is good for the province.

Sometimes I think the region believes its own press too much on the second point. Ion can only sustainably incentivize and maintain development to the extent it actually moves passengers, and improves the transit network as a whole.

Paramilitary groups are part of an authoritarian regime. They provide just enough distance for plausible deniability, but can carry out even more terrible atrocities than the state forces.

Absolutely. We could have it regionalized to some degree even for federal elections. Check out @fairvote.ca for more rationale and details on options.

If a Canadian team wins does that mean no White House invitation? That might actually save some drama.

Driving is a privilege based on skill, not a right. People would howl because of how trapped people are without a car in much our built environment.

That particular subdivision was built in a place that will be very hard to serve by transit, which is a worse planning decision than not leaving more space for parking.

Its a geometry problem-cars take a lot of space. Space is limited and costs money, especially to build and maintain infrastructure on it. Funny how the councillor talks about families having trouble making ends meet, but expects them to have two cars. Cars are expensive, alternatives are cheaper.

I always get the ring-style apple fritters at the Mennonite Relief Sale in New Hamburg at the end of May. (I am biased a bit because the church I grew up at ran that tent, so I got to help as a teenager.) I associate those apple fritters with the Relief Sale that it is weird to eat them elsewhere.

A former co-worker once said that politicians get in trouble when they start to believe their own press. With all the "yes-men" around him and on Fox News, he is probably being told what he wants to hear, and believing it. He kind of admitted as much in the call with Oregon's governor.

Winning at hockey was one thing, but to have the Americans paid by a Canadian corporation beat the Americans paid by a U.S. corp in baseball would honestly be really nice.

Some of us are trying to organize for nonviolent civil defense for the possibility of an invasion of Canada by the U.S.

Not sure, but an acknowledgement is in order. Bicycles use much less space than cars, but they do take some space. They also don't have the built-in security that cars do. We should expect better options, but also realize that there are complications.

It remains to be seen if we in the Region of Waterloo can learn from our own success on a Phase Two extension to Cambridge. Political support in Cambridge isn't as solid, among other factors.

When I canvassed, especially in the municipal election, speeding on the street was a big concern. However, when I was on a street with a slow speed limit and camera, residents were upset at the congestion, slowness, and getting tickets.

Service and effectiveness are more important than grand plans and specific words. Much of your "wired" is what real BRT actually provides, but if we focus on creating that where it is most needed, rather than all-or-nothing along a full corridor, we'd be better off. Esp for priority lanes.

Trains have their place. Every city needs buses, some can also use some trains.
September 11, 2025 at 12:17 AM
I'd encourage the cities or region to push ahead with bike lanes or road diets, and make the province own any attempts to over-rule the locally-made decisions.

True - these could be timed to connect well. I would expect more ridership within Cambridge than between Fairway and Preston or Pinebush, though.
August 27, 2025 at 5:14 PM
A bus "bridge" with dedicated lanes on the 8/401 would be a more cost-effective way to link the two parts of the Ion.

I like the incremental approach. I wonder if it should be in the other order though - start in downtown Galt, and move out from there. That would focus it on where rail is most important for Cambridge (constrained corridors, ridership in downtown with walkable area and more transit connections).

Hmm, changing your opinion after being considering the evidence. How radical!
