All I am saying is that if I had a platform as large and as influential as yours I would think long and hard about how my tweets come across, to all parties. And I wouldn't spout off because a twerpish leftist riled my pique.

I would much rather it framed as despite the efforts of the fascists, our institutions are still standing. Institutions are just people and by chiding people for worrying about fascism you may give someone somewhere permission to not fight as hard to preserve our democracy.

What I don't understand here is your goals or your audience professor Nichols.
The way I see it, if Trump is a fascist threat as you have previously stated, our biggest problems are complacency or Resignation. And I see a lot more problems with complacency.

But what is the point in scolding people for calling out what are very clearly fascist tactics. What is meant to be achieved here? Idk to me this reads as "ICE goons fascistically operating above the law can't be called fascist because sandwich guy got off."

But allowing elections or court proceedings to occur isn't the ultimate test of fascism is it? Surely there are other boxes to be ticked. And if it were, what is the point in holding off calling this administration fascist until they curtail those rights? Surely at that point it would be too late.

I guess what I don't understand is what is the point of scolding people for calling all this fascist? To keep your powder dry for when the "true fascism" emerges? If that true form is predicated on complete control, as Nichols seems to posit, it will be too late anyway.

The difficulty here is that fascism isn't a governing form, it's not even an ideology really, it's more an aesthetic with some overarching goals. So when naysayers point to our government not acting in the same manner fascist governments—when in power—acted, I feel like they're missing the point.

There are people who say that America is a fascist country. Generally these are folks who say the US has always been fascist and Trump is just the final form. But I don't think those leftists are the usual targets for such chiding. It's more against those who call Trump a fascist as an aberration.
