A recent discovery of the score’s original 2-inch, 24-track music masters has led the way to a stellar, high-resolution transfer by Warner Sound. This first generation element has been restored, remixed, assembled and remastered by album producer Mike Matessino, resulting in a stunning presentation of this legendary score that is unparalleled in its sonic quality. Discs One and Two present maestro Williams’ film score in its glorious, full form, while Disc Two also contains a bounty of alternate/additional cues (including an astonishing early version of “The Fortress of Solitude” that remained vaulted and unplayed for four decades), and Disc Three showcases the original 1978 soundtrack presentation, rebuilt and remastered from these newly restored recording elements. Supervised and approved by composer John Williams, this special 3-CD release is limited to 5000 units and features a 44-page booklet with in-depth liner notes. The heroic art design is by Jim Titus. The Three Musketeers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music composed and conducted by Michael Kamen. Intrada announces an expanded edition of the 1993 Disney action-adventure film The Three Musketeers, for which composer Michael Kamen delivered a lengthy, epic score. In an unusual practice, Kamen was selected as the composer months before shooting began, a show of confidence after his work on a another, recent literary epic: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Kamen’s score for The Three Musketeers is a traditional symphonic work. In view of the Baroque era in which the story takes place, he researched and incorporated period instruments such as harpsichord, recorder and crumhorn (a double reed) into the ensemble; he also wove in ornamental trills and flourishes characteristic of the period. Many of his set pieces convey an almost classical sense of structure, with recurring devices such as the driving ostinato and associated heroic figures. Kamen’s intention was for specific instruments to be associated with each of the three Musketeers and their young protégé: trumpet, tuba, flute and French horn. Kamen also lavishes equal attention on the film’s villains—snarling, descending brass motif announces the presence of both Cardinal Richelieu and his Red Guards. At the time of the film's release, Hollywood Records released a 42-minute album featuring highlights from the score. This new 2-CD release more than doubles the length of that original album, with a total score time of 98 minutes. A few alternates and source music appear after the complete program, as well as the complete original Hollywood Records program. For this release, Bruce Botnick remixed and mastered the entire score from the original digital masters. Neil S. Bulk along with Botnick produced the final master, and the release features notes by John Takis.

The third disc is actually two discs in Quartet Records penultimate 30th Anniversary release of Jerry Goldsmith's classic action score for the 1990 film Total Recall. I have listened to this phenomenal score countless times since purchasing the original Varese album as one of my first CDs.

The second disc is Dario Marianelli's enduringly popular score for the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice. An excerpt from Dawn's alluring piano is the ringtone I have set for my wife's calls. Needless to say, Marianelli's charming score (and movie) is a long-standing favorite in our household.

A few new discs arrived in the mail today including this gorgeous beauty from Patrick Doyle for the 1995 film Une femme français. The end credits track with the same title has to be among Doyle's best works. The soprano vocals by Jill Gomez are especially moving.
