"Now's our chance, fiiiire!" Gunshots. I heard them too well. Of course, they'd shoot at them. That stupid, frail, weak person who had managed to endure for so long, through so many travels. How could I not? How can I stand there when I know we're... No. My world is in the wrong. I don't know why I'm bothering to do this with a smile. I learned that from them—someone who continued to fight even after being knocked down again and again. If I were to let them die, it would be a mistake on my end. If I don't die for them, I'm killing someone I should have saved. Ivan said it so well: we have lost everything. We Yaga are alive, but are we living? How do they feel, knowing that to save their world, they must destroy mine? Is it fair? Is this their only reward for defeating Ivan the Terrible? I see them, standing motionless, about to kneel, as if they've accepted their execution. I don't know why. I don't know why. I don't know why. I could kill them. But even so, I begin to run. Even the ability to laugh has disappeared from the Yaga’s hearts. We have learned to live fearlessly. But this is not bravery, for they are brave—overcoming their fears. As a Yaga, I have no fears. Death is a given. However, there's something I can't fathom. As a Yaga. As something not human... No. As me, Patxi... I don't want to see the death of someone who knows how to live smiling. Just like that, I jumped into that rain of bullets. They're not what "humans" would call normal bullets. We Yaga make our own bullets, so they create terrible explosions upon hitting Demonic Beasts, like I am. Like we all are—beasts. Everything goes dark. I can't see them well, but I hear it. "Patxi...?" Their smell, their clothing. I have to cling to it. Poorly as I can now, I hold on to their silly shirt's collar, kneeling. "Ah... Dammit." "Patxi...?" I hear their stupidly sweet voice. Just like that, I... "I'll never forgive you." "You know why? It's because of you... that I know there's a happier world out there. So stand up, dammit. Stand up and fight for it. Go on and brag about how you can smile in your world, and tell us why it should be the one to survive." I feel my grip on their heavy jacket fading away. They're holding on to my arm, crying. This is acceptable. If I die giving them a push to make it... That's acceptable. I can live with that! I should live with that knowledge, even if I can't see it! "Be proud. Hold your head up high, and fight for your weak little world. Don't you dare go losing to a world like this, a world whose only virtue is strength!" They object. Of course, the once-Pollyanna would. They're part of a once happier world. Of course, they can't pretend this won't happen. Of course, they'll put so much blood on their hands. "Go on. Go on beyond this white hell. Take it back. Take back to that beautiful, happier world. You are the one that should survive, not me, not anyone else here! Masters, Servants, Lostbelts... I know nothing. But I want to see that there's a better place. A world that's not wrong. We made a mistake, and ended up all twisted. But it has a meaning." I kneel. They fall to the ground as I do so. Their paw is on my face, so soft, so frail. Why shouldn't I fight to protect something like this? Why shouldn't any other Yaga? "Patxi, save your strength, please. That's enough!" They're breaking down as I tighten my grip on them. I have to ease this. I can't make it worse than they already are. "It doesn't hurt. I'm not afraid. You're having it rougher now. But that's why I want you to live. Say something, dammit! Answer me!" A silent nod as tears fall down their face. Once more, I smile, satisfied. I did it. I saved them. I can die now. "Haha... Look at you. You're crying... Turns out, making you cry... Isn't as fun as I thought..." ... Just like that, I died. Wishing for a miracle—that they lived on, that they don't forget about this. There's a feeling of... guilt I can't shake off. Will they be fine? Will they make it to the place they ought to reclaim? Hell do I know. As I feel my life undone, my vision changes. I see a confrontation—that pale girl against a bunch of those Servants. After she shields her Master and fades away, their glances, their attacks change and turn to my vision... And then, silence and void after the collapse. I can still think. I'm not gone. I am somewhere else. Adrift. Lost. Wandering. I hope for a miracle. I hope to see a happy place. Just one tiny miracle, to see a place like their homeworld was... A place where people can make it through life smiling. Just that. And then—my vision turns...
