how it started vs how it’s going, one year later 💟💟💟

black marxism by cedric j. robinson i have to be honest, i am fascinated with the contents of this book but i am having to piecemeal my way through it because it is DENSE. i do think all self-described leftists should read this, especially my fellow white leftists. it was and is instrumental to understanding that while marxist leftism may have its place, it is very white- and european-centered and it would behoove us all to look to Black and POC voices in our struggle for liberation from capitalism. sisters of the lost nation by nick medina this was an impulse grab from the “recommended” section of my local library (because our librarian is awesome and always has great recs) and i was unexpectedly blown away by it. the writing is fantastic and it was an easy read but there is SO MUCH in here. the characters and the world are rich and full. it made me laugh, it broke my heart, it enraged me, it gave me hope. i learned a lot. king leopold’s ghost by liam hochschild i just finished this one yesterday and i don’t really have the words to talk about it yet. first of all the writing is amazing and flows like a story even though it’s non-fiction. and beyond that, the history of the colonization of the Congo (and equatorial Africa in general) is told here with, i think, a lot of empathy and respect for the colonized peoples while pulling no punches about the absolute villainy and moral bankruptcy on the part of the belgian king and his actors. it gives a lot of context, brings a lot of receipts, and is a great place to start looking into how the Congo has been exploited for its natural resources for centuries at the expense of the indigenous populations (to put it very very mildly). a pretty scathing indictment of european colonization in general. absolutely every white person alive should make it a point to read this, and then learn about the modern day slavery still happening there today a fever in the heartland by timothy egan i just started this one today but even from the summary and the intro i can tell it’s going to be a banger. i’m pretty sure someone on bluesky recommended it in a comment section and i’m already learning things i had no fucking idea about.
