They want a partner who will allow herself to be treated like a traditional wife but who won't pressure them to abide by the norms of masculinity.

I think it comes down to the fact that many conservative women expect their partners to be traditional men - hypermasculine, unemotional, sole providers to their families - and even conservative men find that horribly stifling and hard to attain.

Definitely applies to We Have Always Lived in the Castle too

The mixture of relief, exhaustion and barely concealed frustration in his body language when he finds Fumie at the top of those steps hits hard. Yakusho nailed the overall demeanor of a guy who spends every waking
second fighting to swallow his anger.

I have to imagine people are starved for episodic narrative games enough to overlook how comprehensively terrible the writing is, from the dialogue to the plot structure.

Excellent example. I think what makes it work is that, even though individuals like Sejanus, Tiberius and Caligula are morons, the show always highlights how they achieved power through people who enabled them and saw some benefit in helping them climb the imperial hierarchy.

I'm reminded of something you wrote recently, that evil is the desire to hurt the vulnerable for their vulnerability. Incredible to see someone expressing a similar sentiment to describe Israel's actions and then go uuuhhh it's bad that young people are horrified at this!

Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner but make it stupid

Weirdly horrifying ending, but "I might need the crevice attachment" had me in fits.

First time Erythrosuchus is featured in a documentary and it's shit, smh

Favourite piece of paleoart?

Also goddamn AAA game design is becoming homogenised to hell. Imagine being told ten years ago that a Silent Hill title would have a parry mechanic. That a fucking DOOM game would.

The combat system combines the worst of both worlds. Provides too many options to make the player feel truly vulnerable but too few to make each encounter interesting from a pure action perspective.

My main issue with it (and with a lot of "grief horror") is that it's hardly exploring grief with any depth. Loss is not so much a genuine thematic concern in these films as a sort of MacGuffin that drives the characters to acts of depravity and self-destruction.

I had the misfortune of coming across images on the other site. Nobody was going to survive that.

Agree on the blocking being key. The shot of a poisoned Augustus stumbling against the gambling table before Livia appears inches from his face like a spectre of death... fucking hell.

Wouldn't hurt to see a highly territorial herbivore as the main dinosaur antagonist either.

I desperately need a film in which giant theropods actually stalk their prey rather than charge and roar and cause earthquakes with every footfall. How creepy would it be to see a character being silently followed by a tyrannosaur through a forest?

Jk, Pentiment

Yeah, it is so comprehensively character-driven and so often chooses to resolve its main conflicts in the strangest, quietest, most haunting ways. The post-GoT tv landscape wouldn't know what to do with a show like it.

Awful news, but kudos for sticking to your guns and keeping the game as is. The moment we start self-censoring to appease those reactionary shitehawks is the moment they truly win.

A complete disappointment. At least Tim Haines, the creator of the original show, is creating an eight part series on mass extinctions called Surviving Earth (with practical effects!!!)

He showed his whole ass with the little aside about her calling the dog her 'literal child'. Just a guy furious that a woman won't be a mother.
July 17, 2025 at 1:25 AM
Great article. For a guy famous for the weirdness of his writing, Kojima's treatment of womanhood has always felt deeply conventional to me.
