Yes it will take more than one class to help build up ambition and motivation. It may not feel like you are breaking through, but some of those quiet ones really are listening and pondering about their options. #elemmathchat

This is a good idea. Confirm first and then ask, just to help build that trust up. I wonder if instead of asking a question, first just praise or notice the process and not the answer. Something like, I noticed you drew 5 circles to show 5 (with a big smile on your face). #elemmathchat

Very thought provoking question...is there an opportunity to get them OUT into the community? Or virtual field trips and interviews? Our school has a person that helps teachers connect with community businesses, but if you don't have that you could ask the chamber of commerce. #Elemmathchat

I wonder how much is their lack of awareness of the options out there? It is hard to be passionate about a future career that you don't even know is an option yet? How can we help expose them to more experiences so they might be exposed to something? #elemmathchat

I've only taught pre-service teachers at the community college level - but they actually have always been very eager to engage in conversation and were quicker to open up then some of the HS kids. Although at collegiate level they have chosen to be there, not forced :P #Elemmathchat

I've taught elementary, middle, and high school &it definitely took LONGER for some of the HS kids to trust and participate a bit more. Some never completely did, but they atleast were hearing more converations and discussion within the classroom. #Elemmathchat

I found this out on accident. After a few weeks of focusing on MY questioning, I noticed the STUDENTS were asking great questions of themselves, others, and me. #elemmathchat

"We are giving them ownership of their learning" - I LOVE THAT!!😍 #Elemmathchat

Exactly! They have to know that we value their ideas and thoughts and will not judge them or make them feel dumb if their answer is not exactly correct. The process is our focus. #elemmathchat

They think they are wrong! When I co-teach in a classroom it is always very obvious when kids are not used to being asked questions after they share ideas or answers for this exact reason. #Elemmathchat

The possible errors and misconceptions is so critical to really be prepared to ask good questions. When I work with teachers that are in a new grade level to them, I often spend time before new units helping them think through this. #Elemmathchat

That's not cheating. Work smarter, not harder is what that is. :) #Elemmathchat

Yes! When you question them, the start to ask themselves those questions and it really builds up that ability to self start when they get stuck. #Elemmathchat
