And somewhat less fraught, I was struck by his description of the travails of raising backyard chickens (and repeatedly digging them out of the snow) during WWII. Which feels like the opposite of the sort of pure life of the mind often attributed to him.

There's an app called Photosync that will do that over WiFi, both manually and as a scheduled overnight job.

(I have no connection to it other than as a user, but it made my life a bit easier.)

Except when she doesn't. 🙂

Though when she was younger, my niece was also vehement that she was *Superman*, even when wearing her much-loved skirted costume.

That said, I have a soft spot for Kristin Wells. 🙂

Yes- there have been a fair number of Superwoman characters. They're just all obscured enough that you have to be pretty deep in the weeds to know them.

Which makes it less likely that any is the favorite of a randomly selected person than that they're confusing Supergirl or Wonder Woman for her.

See, e.g., how much of his writing was done on the back of exam papers he'd graded for extra money.

The *Confederacy* had Congressional elections during the Civil War, with some states not reporting due to having been retaken by the Union.

You (obviously) never have to hand it to the Confederacy. But it says something about the cultural/political/legal durability of the election cycle.

I am reliably informed by primary sources that it's the stormtroopers in the face-concealing gear who tend to be weak-minded.

Since we didn't expand to Soylent Green levels, I'm guessing that we likewise won't decline to extinction.

Which doesn't mean we won't have problems from a top-heavy demographic pyramid, which may call for policy options.

(But it should probably be treated as a challenge, and not the apocalypse.)

Exponential growth (if it had continued as so many feared) eventually would hit obvious physical limits.

Decline presents the issues we're grappling with.

I can't imagine perfect stability without intrusive measures well beyond what China did.

I'm sure it will be consequential (and obviously we should be opening up immigration in response). But having lived through the Population Bomb era, I also can't help but notice that all population trends are bad.

I suspect it's exactly the argument he thinks it is.

I choose to believe, in part because of the courage shown in the presence of these thugs in the wake of Good's slaying, that enough of the people of the United States are still capable of mounting a response to that argument. We'll see.

Technology is also being used substantially in the effort to track, document, and identify goons. E.g., everyone having instant encrypted comms and handheld video transmission and shared GPS info and apps to whack-a-mole. The balance there is at least still in contention.

This is all just an elaborate gambit to get readers to say "Man, they'd be *so* much better off if Tom Bombadil were in this story," isn't it?
