Policy peep. Interests in climate & energy, science, research, higher ed and #auspol. Lapsed chemist. Skews wonky. Likes greyhounds and applied underwater physics.
Post this morning from Chris Bowen about additions to battery level storage, using the non-standard energy unit of a Toast. But suspect the real story is deeper here, and fully expect commentariat to be examining whether the quantum of Vegemite applied is appropriate, politically or culturally.

Props to my colleague today who hypothesised the general case of the Schrödinger apostrophe - applied to a phrase in which it could plausibly be a singular possessive; plural posessive, or entirely absent.

Turns out that govts can create an orderly transition plan for phaseout of a once-critical essential part of economic infrastructure. People in the 80s and 90s would have lost their mind at needless economic destruction. treasury.gov.au/sites/defaul... Big Cheque is missing in action on this one.

Timely reminder of the importance of planning a staged transition away from gas for end users (esp. homes and small biz). This won't be the last provider to decide it's no longer viable to supply, leaving consumers (or govt) to pay big $$$ for a rushed change.

Gas supply to 10 regional Victorian towns to be cut by end of 2026
The announcement by Solstice Energy will affect more than 1,000 customers, who will be forced to go electric or change to bottled gas.

This is a super interesting article on the role that international remittances play in development assistance - migrants directing aid to their home communities, in ways where it directly benefits outcomes like school attendance and economic development. www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2...
Revealed. Australia's surprising army of philanthropists
Arguably the most generous Australians are found within Australia’s diaspora communities, providing a lifeline to global communities.

Moment of energy nerd joy - my solar app has become a Sankey diagram. Now kind of want to add in energy harvested from the environment via heat pumps as well.

So #AusVotes25 is almost done and dusted. But I think there's one contest still outstanding - who issued the best electoral writs. (The Cth issues HoR + Sn8 writs for ACT/NT, state governors issue others.) Here: www.aec.gov.au/election/wri...
-Cth - Arial. Drab 90s vibe.
-NSW: Plan, drab. Nice seal.

Nerds-turned-alchemists at CERN have turned lead into gold, although sadly only within the tubes of the Large Hadron Collider, creating gold-plated walls over 3y. At AU$12b to build/operate, I calculate levelised cost of gold produced at about AUD$43 *quintillion* per gram.

DNSPs take note.
Physicists turn lead into gold — for a fraction of a second
Colliding beams of lead create fast-moving, short-lived gold ions. Understanding the process could help to refine particle-accelerator experiments.

Today I'm appreciative of the work done in the wonkery at the RBA. Their research is wide-ranging (relatively speaking) and provides useful insights across several domains.

In particular, I think their provision of 'non-technical summaries' along with their research papers is highly commendable.

I am *almost* sad that the ABS has not wished us 'Seasonally Adjusted Greetings' in almost seven years now.

Due to the cold snap, we have turned on a heating device some weeks in advance of Anzac Day. This being a mortal crime agains the culture and norms of Canberra, I fully expect the feds to be along shortly to sieze the offending equipment.

The next instalment of Cth's social housing #energyefficiency upgrades has been announced w/ NSW, targeting low-performing houses. Super important to bring lowest performing up to *adequate*, and direct investment into social/public housing retrofit helps everyone.

A heat pump that delivers heat up to 250ºC.. and it looks like a V8. (Or a V6 I suppose). And uses helium as a working fluid. Surely everyone's got to be on board with this...
