As a Gen Xer I can tell you we grew up under Reagan watching jingoistic films like Red Dawn, Rambo, and Missing In Action and sadly a lot of my generation drank the Kool-Aid. Compassion was definitely not taught. Rush Limbaugh and the religious right became a thing too in the 90s. 🤦♂️

Well, he wasn’t in power yet a year ago. I know this year has felt like four. Other than that, I agree with you.

In fact, this poem was predicting the coming of fascism in the early 20th century. The “beast” that Yeats mentions is fascism. Horrifying that we are here again.
