I honestly believe that could happen to you or someone in a similar position, most of the time people are talking out of their arses. If you'd choose to fight that sorta stuff you tend to have to seek out the policies yourself, even though it should be the other way round.

Yeah 'policy' is absolutely wielded in that way and even when they do actually exist they're hidden and misused. Saying that though I don't think I've ever worked somewhere or been a part of an institution that doesn't have a bank of policies you can search through.

I think that's only the case if they want to hire from abroad. However its not uncommon for company policies, especially in the public sector, to require listings to be posted.
