‘French in London and the Brexit Question: Did Anything Change?’ Patrick Le Galès (CNRS, Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics, SciencesPo/OxPo) 27 November, 5.15 pm Maison française d'Oxford London and Paris (urban regions) have become world cities, more globalised. Exchanges have risen and the Eurostar has allowed for large scale mobility between the two. The research on French in London and English in Paris aims at trying to identify patterns of mobility and the making of a London/Paris Upper middle class. The presentation will deal with London where three series of interviews took place in 2017, 2019, and /2025. It argues that Brexit has created a cleavage between those French middle classes that keeps playing with agility between London and Paris and those who distanced themselves from France, including in terms of strategies for their children, real estate or citizenship Patrick Le Galès is CNRS research professor at Sciences Po in sociology, political science and urban studies, at the Centre for European studies and comparative politics. He is a fellow of the British Academy, the Academia Europea, l’Académie des technologies. He is a co editor of the European Journal of Sociology. and was the founding Dean of Sciences Po Urban School. His current work deals with transational mobility and urban class making, the governance of large metropolis (WHIG, What is governed and not governed in large metropolis Paris, London, Sao Paulo, Mexico, Milan, Hong Kong), the restructuring of the state and public policies in Europe (including the UK). Publications include Globalised minds roots in the city (2015) with A.Andreotti and J.Fuentes; Reconfigurating European states in Europe, (with D.King), 2017, La métropole parisienne, une anarchies organisée (with F.Artioli) 2024, The Routledge Handbook of comparative global studies (with J.Robinson), 2024, The instrumentation of public policies (with C.Halpern, P.Lascoumes) Forthcoming 2025.

Migrants dans les villes et villages de France et d’ailleurs Le Bord de l'eau - Documents Depuis le milieu des années 2010, de nombreuses localités urbaines et rurales européennes se sont publiquement affichées comme « villes d’accueil » ou « villages d’accueil » des personnes en migration, en opposition à l’option sécuritaire adoptée par les États en matière migratoire. D’autres sont devenues « accueillantes » au gré des circonstances. D’autres encore sont engagées de longue date dans une politique d’intégration de leur population immigrée. Dans le même temps, les réseaux nationaux ou transnationaux regroupant des acteurs investis dans la prise en charge des migrants se multiplient. Ces réseaux sont aussi un relais d’expression d’un militantisme urbain sur les questions migratoires. Appuyé sur des enquêtes inédites menées en France, Danemark, Espagne, Italie et Portugal, et sur l’analyse de bases de données sur les réseaux de villes (monde, Afrique subsaharienne, pays européens), cet ouvrage documente et analyse ces dynamiques qui, toutes, font du local un échelon essentiel de la « gouvernance » des migrations – à savoir, un espace de gestion de l’accueil où se croisent et collaborent (ou non) des acteurs de plus en plus diversifiés, fonctionnaires, acteurs privés, habitants et militants notamment, mais aussi les personnes en migration, qui savent se saisir du local pour avancer dans leur parcours. Alors que le président Macron veut installer les personnes en exil dans les campagnes françaises, le livre éclaire sous un nouveau jour l’accueil tel qu’il se déroule dans les grandes métropoles mais aussi en dehors de celles-ci.

Annual Meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society and Conference on Romani Studies, Paris 2025 24-25-26 September 2025 Campus Condorcet (Aubervilliers) Organisers: The Gypsy Lore Society, Inalco, Institut Convergences Migrations, FNASAT, Médiathèque Matéo Maximoff VITALE Tommaso Living with Antigypsyism: Contentious Embeddedness and the Struggle for Recognition in France This keynote explores how antigypsyism structures social life in France, not only as prejudice but as a condition of living marked by stigma, contentious embeddedness, and dissonant recognition. Drawing on the CNCDH barometer, I show that hostility towards Roma and Traveller groups remains structurally higher than towards any other minority, sustaining a perception of radical otherness. Yet antigypsyism is more than a statistical pattern: it is reproduced and contested through public discourse, political agendas, media campaigns, and everyday encounters. Ethnographic and network studies reveal that Roma lives are deeply interwoven with neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and associations, where solidarity, hostility, and indifference coexist in fragile balance. Mobilizations—whether civic, religious, or school-based—demonstrate both the limits of inclusion and the generative role of conflict in reshaping boundaries and claims to dignity. At the same time, the emerging struggle over the memory of the Roma genocide illustrates how recognition unfolds in dissonant ways, simultaneously denied, affirmed, and politicized. Antigypsyism, I argue, is not a fixed legacy but a dynamic and contested process: it exposes the contradictions of plural democracy, while opening unexpected spaces for solidarity and new forms of recognition.

Detecting Group Mentions in Political Rhetoric A Supervised Learning Approach Published online by Cambridge University Press: 01 September 2025 Hauke Licht and Ronja Sczepanski Abstract Politicians appeal to social groups to court their electoral support. However, quantifying which groups politicians refer to, claim to represent, or address in their public communication presents researchers with challenges. We propose a supervised learning approach for extracting group mentions from political texts. We first collect human annotations to determine the passages of a text that refer to social groups. We then fine-tune a transformer language model for contextualized supervised classification at the word level. Applied to unlabeled texts, our approach enables researchers to automatically detect and extract word spans that contain group mentions. We illustrate our approach in two applications, generating new empirical insights into how British parties use social groups in their rhetoric. Our method allows for detecting and extracting mentions of social groups from various sources of texts, creating new possibilities for empirical research in political science.
