Before joining the ULB, he was associate professor at the Catholic University of Lille. His research focuses on state making and secessionist conflicts, the politics of international law, and international theory.

He has been visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, the American University in Cairo (AUC), the Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt, and the Centre de recherches internationales (CERI) at Sciences Po in Paris.

Janis Grzybowski received his PhD from the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID) in Political Science / International Relations and was a postdoctoral researcher at Helsinki University
