The handwritten note was almost identical to a 1916 newspaper article about Australian fire beetles. However, deciphering it proved challenging due to the presence of shorthand abbreviations. Could you read the handwriting and decipher the shorthand abbreviations? Let us know in the comments ...

Humans are not the only ones drawn to fire and flames. So too is the Australian fire beetle which loves exploring in the immediate aftermath of a bushfire.

Our archivist recently discovered notes about the insect, possibly dating back to 109 years, in one of our books in the Basser Library.

Today, the Academy’s CEO Anna-Maria Arabia, independent MP Dr Monique Ryan, medical research bodies, and experts at Parliament House called for removing the arbitrary funding cap on the Medical Research Future Fund to support medical research and innovation as intended. #releasethefullmrff

Jim was dedicated to the Academy right to the end, attending Science at the Shine Dome just six weeks ago.

“Jim made outstanding contributions to Australian science, agriculture and science education over many years,” Prof Jagadish said.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of the Academy's former President and former Chief Scientist of Australia, Dr Jim Peacock AC FAA FTSE FRS at the age of 87. Academy President, Professor Chennupati Jagadish AC, said Jim will be deeply missed and remembered as a champion of Australian science.
