God help me, it's not like I want this country to fall. But when the election results came in, I was struck by an inescapable truth: As a black gay man, a member of two vulnerable communities, my country will never stand up for me. Very well. I was raised in survival mode, anyway.

Upon my return from abroad last week, I was asked the following in rapid succession:
“Where are you coming from?”
“What were you doing in Mexico?”
“Who do you work for?”
“What do they do?”
“What do you do for them?”
“How long have you worked for them?”
This did not feel normal.
