That's my infant son. Not posed, just a moment of perfect serendipity. At least, that's what we'll tell the therapist. He's 16. This picture was prescient.

wait, this article wants readers to think that these are *bad* classes? what a bunch of uncurious dipshits

definitely not the right medium wrote my response and was like "well that's shit" but is this how I want to spend my next hours? I mean yes...

The other 4 are shorter (9 wks?) almost exploratory classes that don't differentiate by level

after that, I think I'd have two levels of English in a high school and I'd just call them English and Honors English. Anyone could take either level, but honors English will kick your ass in a different way? 8 semesters of English required (were sem block), 4 are either English or honors

I think my first response would be skepticism about high school students' need to be doing "college level" work (whatever those words mean) maybe high school is high school and college is college and dual enrollment is dual enrollment and virtual classes try to make up the space between

How would you build it? Knock it down and put English curriculum back together. What would it look like to you? I'll post a response in a follow up
November 26, 2025 at 7:40 PM
same. it's a discussion with students: is the ability to do something quickly a sign of intelligence? why should I score higher because I wrote a meh essay in 55 minutes that takes you 90? We both did meh work but my meh is better because it's faster? oh, wait. Capitalism.

so in some ways the AP gave me license to stray and teach sort of what I wanted with the cover of their "college curriculum" and since I loathe testsandgrades (and the College Board) using the AP to open the curriculum made it sweeter to me.

My enemy became my liberator while still being my enemy?

I will say that the whole English is a skills course is something I've used to my advantage, especially b/c it made it easier to challenge the canon (well, I can teach whatever texts and that's good). Now, in my older age, I feel like I got too far from the "classics"
November 26, 2025 at 7:22 PM
I'm generally aligned with you wrt AP, but as someone who has scored, there was no one answer (in Lang, ignoring that it's probably too easy to write a 4). And in my Sem and Research students, I definitely don't see that. I don't see the curriculum or tests/assessments as that limiting.

I don't think you should but I'm curious to see how caps (and puctuation) evolves
November 9, 2025 at 7:51 PM
hey you're an English teacher (me too)

will you please talk about choosing to use internet caps for your social posts?

I think about this a lot and talk about it with my students and am curious about people who intentionally do this
