Nice long walk around the neighborhood today. Just a bit under 13.5km.

"Morning, sweetheart," her dad said without looking up. The same tired greeting he'd given her every morning for sixteen years. She wondered if he even heard himself saying it anymore. "Morning," Emma mumbled, sliding into her usual chair. The table was set with the good plates, the ones they usually saved for holidays. A pitcher of fresh orange juice sat in the centre, alongside a bowl of cut fruit arranged in perfect circles. Her mother had gone all out, as if a fancy breakfast could somehow make this trip something other than what it was: a forced march to Oregon.

Time is the first thing that breaks. You don't notice it at first, but then your phone says one thing, the car clock says another, and that gas station attendant? I can still see him, even now. The way his thumb worn that groove in his pocket watch from checking it over and over. The way his eyes would dart to it every few seconds, like a nervous tic he couldn't control. Three forty-seven, always three forty-seven. He knew what we'd done before we even spoke. Saw it in my eyes, he said. They all have those eyes after. I wanted to ask him what he meant, but some part of me already knew. After you say the words and you realize that time isn't a river flowing forward but a trap, and you're already caught. The static on the radio should have been our first warning. The way it kept cutting to that same cheerful voice while we were still pretending everything was normal then. Still believing we could drive away from what I'd invited in. Three forty-seven. He whispered it like a prayer, like a ward against something worse.

But it wasn’t there. It was like looking at a Lucas-shaped hole in the world, a space where matter should be but wasn’t. Her eyes kept trying to fill in the details, to make sense of absence shaped like presence, but there was nothing to grasp. It was emptiness given form, void pretending to be her brother.”

We visited Urquhart castle on our way to Skye from Inverness. Last time I was there in 2018 there were maybe 5 other people and it was a one in a million photo opportunity. Today was just hot and busy, meh. But the castle is still cool!

Today I saw the Magna Carta, a Gutenberg Bible, pages of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein draft, and other amazingly old written documents.

Then we drove through some beautiful English countryside and we end the day at Ellenborough Park.
