It was used to deliver some kind of leased line service, wasn't it? I seem to recall seeing them as optional cables for Cisco routers.

AUI sucked (and the sliding clip type was arguably worse than the screw type), but nevertheless the absolute worst network-related connector of all time is the FC fibre connector. Every time I have to use one of those bastard things I wish unspeakable things to befall its inventors.

It's not going to work as well for us not because our microwave ovens are underpowered, but because our kettles are overpowered. Even the cheapest kettles here in the UK are 2000+ watts. Mine is 3000 watts.

An excellent idea. South London should get a go at being north London.

I once helped to decommission a main comms room that had a dense carpet of lan/wan cables underneath the raised floor tiles. We found at least half a dozen Allied Telesyn fibre media converters fully buried in the cabling and still happily working away. They must have been there for years.

JaGUar

It's willfully awful

It'll probably work. Can't say for sure but I'd definitely give it a try.

Ethernet heals, right?
November 19, 2024 at 6:58 PM
It depends on the quality of the cable and its length. 2.5G Ethernet is rated work at up to 100m on Cat5E. But there's not a lot of difference between Cat5 and Cat5E and what differences there are become less significant over shorter cable lengths. How long's the cable?
November 19, 2024 at 6:57 PM
The usual way is to cut the cable, crimp a plug on each end, and then connect them with a coupler. You can get waterproof couplers for use outside.

Those things were absolute tanks. Back in the day I had one loaded up with RAM and it happily ran Windows/386. Well, as happily as anything could run that unstable pile of crap. Unusually good keyboard, too. Much nicer to type on than the one on the Compaq Portable 386.

He doesn't look like the kind of person who'd be able to chase you very far

Not to any appreciable amount. USB 3.0 is easily fast enough for Gigabit Ethernet. There'll be a tiny bit of latency for the USB protocols etc but you're not going to notice.
If you need faster then USB C 2.5Gig adaptors are easy to find. 10Gig is possible but has issues.

When was the last time you saw a TV advert for lard?
November 17, 2024 at 8:24 PM
That is glorious, absolutely glorious.

Your body doesn't do that? That must get messy.
April 4, 2024 at 12:11 PM
By "wouldn't be feasible" do you mean "genuinely physically impossible", or just "cost a bit more than things currently cost"?

I remind myself that just because it wasn't easy, it doesn't mean it wasn't worthwhile.

Long term we'd find ways to cope. Short term would be utter chaos. Complete collapse of supply chains, entire industries grinding to a halt, public services collapsing.
It's taken 30-odd years of incremental change to bring us to this point. Going back 30 years in a day would be catastrophic.

You'd have thought that half-way through putting on all the braid, medals and assorted dangly bits at least someone would have said "You know, I think that's a bit too much." My sodding christmas tree had less ornamentation than that.

I'm not sure I believe that. I've seen the documentary Deep Blue Sea. Samuel L Jackson was out of the water when he got eaten.

Scamming crypto-bros out of their money doesn't seem particularly difficult.
