Back then I didn't knew a word of English, but all the books "available" were written in English. So I sat down for many hours with the book, a dictonary and tried to make sense out of it.

Tbf, I was only able to do so with the massive help of my brother who explained me every single step. He loved electronics, I was a very curious kid.....
Next step was an Atari 800XL (Xmas 84) which somehow explains my addiction to basic (and visual basic, aswell as my disliking of .net)

Join Internxt and make sure Google, Facebook and others know about it every time you visit your drive.
Because that's THEIR privacy by default setting.
November 21, 2025 at 9:20 AM
Stay away from Internxt. As far as you actually can.
They use reddit, google and facebook JS which means you're completely tracked.

They know about the problem, but ignore it.

There are 100s of hardware forums where (mostly) Windows user discuss problems with a specific hardware on their specific system.
My Medion (clevo barebone) laptop had audio problems with Windows 11 (stopped working after some minutes).
What does that say about Windows? /s
November 20, 2025 at 10:25 PM
But the same (if it doesnt work) is true for Windows. There's a reason for all the many Windows or hardware support forum where many people report random problems with some Windows installations.

If you make it to revive the curiosity you've had when you used a computer the first time (more "what's that" than "how do I do exactly that") you will have a great time.
And if something breaks, pull the USB stick and boot the untouched Windows. No pressure, no pain.
Computer should be fun 👍
November 20, 2025 at 9:01 PM
If you dont want to program theres no need to learn it 😉
Get a fast USB stick, etch a live linux on it and boot from it without changing your system. Try some different distributions (life) until you feel somehow home.
Use that for some days.
Dont hurry, give youself time to be(come) curious

Stay away for now.
Just look at all the scripts their "private by default" drive web app pulls.
But for sure there's a business case for informing facebook, doubleclick, google and reddit about my "private by default" web drive.
Also file timestamps are messed up and you can't create empty files.

Damn Vulnerable Linux (DVL)
Last release 16 years ago was 1.5 named Infectious Disease.
Too lovely beast

In that case Windows isn't plug-n-play either.

Ton of linux software here which Windows in unable to handle (to a part not even the files, since MS insists that file.txt and File.txt can't coexist but are the same ;)
Linux is not a drop in replacement for Windows, but it's absolutely plug-n-play.

"and just work without bs"
And copilot will help you doing exactly that :D
November 20, 2025 at 3:56 PM
And that's based on your experience "during Covid".
So 4+ years ago.... 5.x kernel line.

Computer nerd for 30 years... OMG... either you're rather young or a later starter.
I soldered my first computer (with the help of my older brother) during xmas holidays 1982 (ZX80).
November 20, 2025 at 3:52 PM
Ubuntu "during Covid". So we're talking about 5.x kernel era.
When AMD only started to actively support the kernel and NVidia not even thought about it.

20 minutes...
11 minutes more than for a full Linux Mint install, including the office suite, on a J5040 CPU system (4Cores, 2GHz)

1bn poeple use Windows since they think it's nomal to not being able to use the PC during updates. ;)
November 20, 2025 at 3:20 PM
Yeah, we all know "the linux GUI" :D
Why oh why am I reminded on Dunning-Kruger again....

And the bold statement, now that MS has excluded tons of (recent) hardware from Win11 is just too cute.

"Installed Ubuntu out of boredom during covid"
So only 4 years ago or so.....
But yeah, just as expected, assessment based on outdated knowledge. Q.E.D.

Don't tell me Windows would be a flagship, self configuring, all compatible OS :D

November 20, 2025 at 2:06 PM
"Linux ppl are content to sit in a chair for days to make the OS sort of work..."
Makes me beileve your periodically means once a decade.
I mean, I literally installed a server +virtualization and on top of that an ubuntu in the time Windows searched for updates (not install them, just searching).

Mate, talking about experience and telling one has to modify fstab and do configs without GUIs doesn't really go well together in 2025. Really not.
November 20, 2025 at 6:15 AM
Last time I edited /etc/fstab manually was at least 5 years ago. Its all done with GUI nowadays.
My OH uses Linux Mint for 16 month now and had not opened the terminal once.
November 20, 2025 at 6:12 AM
Sounds slightly (maybe 6-8 years) outdated.
Agree, just use Linux isn't a solution. But assessments based on old experience which isn't applicable anymore isn't much more helpful either.
November 20, 2025 at 6:10 AM
It has both styles and you can select the prefered one during the first start.

I also prefer the old one. (The ribbon BS and MS behavior made me stop being a MVP back then.)

I use it because of the great compatibility with corporate styled ms office documents.

If you want a more polished office alternative, give FreeOffice a try.
Not OS, but at least from an European company bound to GDPR (and German data protection laws)

I only associate Garuda with an Indonesian airline with world class food. ;)

Hope you have funy anyway 👍
