Color Goblin, Self-Described Scamp, Magic: The Gathering Artist

(Him/Them)
Tracking for the other 2 boxes hasn’t updated since they left Salt Lake City, so I have no idea when they’ll actually show up.

This makes me feel less bad about my 3 artifact decks…

- Kilo modular aggro
- Glissa artifact recursion
- Mendicant Core go brrrr

I’m also considering making Toph, modular metal bender, and Aloy

Mana Tithe of course!

Exactly! This also doesn’t set false expectations for what the art will look like.

Or even unfinished concept art. With gen ai as the placeholder, you’re telling your backers to expect something like that, leaving no room for an artist to develop any kind of unique look.

Yeah, a solid title image may cost you $1,000 min, but that is worth it. It shows that the art is important, it will bring the artist & their following into the campaign, and it shows what the art will actually look like when finished.

👇Some of the games I did artwork for that were funded via KS

I’ve worked in this industry since 2015 and I’ve worked on indie games. I’ve done a few pieces of art ahead of a kickstarter.

Part of their kickstarter was there to fund the remaining artwork.

And second off, don’t message artists to ask what they think about your campaign if you are using ai as placeholder imagery. It feels like such a slap in the face to claim you support and respect artists, but then use gen ai.

Also, I don’t care how small your budget is.

In reality, you’re missing the opportunity to tease what the art would ACTUALLY look like, AND bring the artist’s following in to help build hype.

Look at @wraithmarked.bsky.social and what they’re doing with their KS. It’s a great example of actually respecting and appreciating artists.
