“Now or never: It’s time to act”
#AMR is one of the biggest global health challenges, causing thousands of deaths yearly. Resistant bacteria are found not only in hospitals but also in the environment.

We’re going blue for #AMR this week as #WAAW @who.int begins!
“Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.”
At @helmholtz-hioh.bsky.social, we study how antibiotic resistance develops & spreads in a #OneHealth context.

The first Vibrio isolates from the Baltic Sea are now growing on our plates. 🧫
By testing them, we aim to learn more about their characteristics and potential resistance patterns.
Exciting to see the first results taking shape.

We asked ChatGPT to create a comic-style illustration that sums up our research group and topics #AMR #OneHealth 💧🐄🌳🦌🚶‍♀️🦠— here’s the result. I think it captures it well! However, I wonder why we are all wearing shirts of the same color. 😅

We used #genomics, #transcriptomics, and #proteomics to uncover distinctive traits in #Kpneumoniae, offering insights that could support future diagnostics and therapies.

Thanks to all collaborators!

With the Baltic Sea right on our doorstep, we are beginning to investigate Vibrio species, some of which can be relevant opportunistic pathogens. Hopefully, we will gain exciting insights. The first infection this season in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was reported yesterday.

Molecular biology methods are key to our daily wet lab work. They're essential for uncovering mechanisms behind antibiotic resistance, bacterial fitness, and virulence.
Combining these insights lays groundwork for novel strategies to combat #AMR pathogens.

During our stay in Kenya, we had the privilege to work alongside our incredible partners in the heart of the Masai Mara. Surrounded by thousands of cattle, we collected samples to study antimicrobial resistance in this stunning One Health setting.

Week two of the sampling in our #citizenscience project is wrapping up, but the lab work is just getting started🥼🧪. From the first samples, we were already able to isolate a strain that might be an ESBL-producing 𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪🦠🔬. Curious to see what the upcoming samples will bring🤔. #OneHealth

#citizenscience #sciencecommunication: It's a lot of fun, and we're all learning together! We bring the knowledge from our #AMR science to the community. Together with pupils, we collect samples, and look at the AMR results. They are engaged, curious and full of new perspectives. #OneHealth

Today we've created a short video on isolating bacteria from water samples for a citizen science project. It will be shown to school children learning about antimicrobial resistance, #zoonoses, and #onehealth 🌍💧🔬, demonstrating how human, animal, and environmental health are connected.

We focus on two additional research pillars: Functional Omics and Aalternative Strategies. Through projects like DISPATch_MRGN and MDR-DEKOL, we are deepening our understanding of resistance development, fitness and virulence factors in order to develop alternative therapies against #AMR bacteria.

The #AMR Surveillance is supported by an innovative diagnostic pipeline (developed within the InnoDia project) encompassing standardized processing of samples as well as storage, cultivation and cultivation-free (meta-)genomics analyses.

One of the research pillars of our lab is the Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) Surveillance. Within different projects (BALTIC-AMR, WiMoPOH, KenGe) we monitor pathogen circulation in a One Health context, and aim to identify AMR reservoirs and newly emerging pathogens. Image by Elias Eger.
