Yeah but so does a tax increase. But they aren’t bad for the deficit. (I swear I’m not trying to come up with a defense of tariffs!)

You seem smart, so I’m curious if you have a thought: If the tariff does NOT raise any money, then why would it hurt the economy that much? Conversely, if it DOES raise a lot of money, then wouldn’t that reduce the deficit/drop yields? (I am anti-tariff, but this is a paradox I’m thinking through.)
