My father made friends with the local crows wherever he worked. They’d follow him on his lunchtime walks, and would answer him when he whistled to them. Your post brought back memories of him, thank you!

What a wonderful adventure for you and your son, a memory he’ll treasure forever, I’m sure. When I was young my father built a 6” refracting telescope, including grinding the mirror himself (he was an optical physicist, I “helped”). I’ll never forget that experience.
