Oh in that case, a front facing image is usually enough for me, but a reverse side one helps get a better idea of things.

Clothing is optional in my case, but a good starting point to work with. Overly detailed or complex to draw adopts can be a bit intimidating, whereas too simple leaves things feeling a bit lacking. My rule of thumb is if I can easily replicate it 2-3 times in my head from memory, I go for it.
