The way the VW locks work sounds right. In normal operation - driving - locked doors do open using the door lever. It means you can exit the car in emergencies without having to locate and use a separate mechanism - makes sense and is safe. The remote double locks the car for safety when parked.

Apparently a criminal past can significantly impact your UK visa application, potentially leading to refusal or additional scrutiny. A boatload of felonies, having been found by a jury to be rapist and aiding and abetting a genocidal regime appear to be par for the course and totally OK for UK Gov.
