Pirkis et al. have argued that one reason we might not have observed higher suicide rates with COVID was as a result of effective mitigation strategies. In my view our two results together offer support for this idea, & suggest that alcohol bans were an example of such a strategy

Our findings are congruent with global data showing (fantastic work by Ann John, @drknipe.bsky.social & others) that the COVID pandemic did not precipitate a marked rise in suicides despite expectations that it might.

To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind from Africa.

Our results suggest alcohol bans imposed in SA during COVID-19 pandemic may have had a protective effect on suicide rates, adding to work of @kaibarron.bsky.social @tom-moultrie.bsky.social & Kathryn Chu who found similar associations with significantly decreased unnatural deaths & trauma admissions
