My new book, Scales Off, was written for people who, like me, love Jesus but are disillusioned by the noise of far-right politics and coercive religion in the American evangelical church.

Whew…glad that I go to Saturday night service because I just saw a billboard that said worshipping on Sundays is the true mark of the beast.

Thankful I dodged that bullet. #blessed

Literally all he had to say was “Despite our differences, I’m sorry for those who loved him.” But he didn’t even have the decorum to do that.

I’m so ready to have a sense of decency back in the White House.

Now to watch The Princess Bride.

RIP Mr. Reiner. Thanks for the wonderful films.

How are things in 2025?

Well…Weird Al transformed into Serious Albert and did a non-parody cover of Killin’ In The Name.

Soooooo….kiss your loved ones.

A day late…but happy Feast of St. Nicholas to all who celebrate.

The Church must not excuse evil for influence. Doing so tells the world the cross is secondary to an earthly crown.

I saw @pastorbrandon.bsky.social post this on Facebook…Truth folks.

This is one of the points that I emphasize in Scales Off. CN replaces the teachings of Jesus and commission to His Church with the pursuit of earthly sociopolitical dominance.

A poem for those who love Jesus, but struggle to see Him beyond culture wars, far-right politics, cult like coercive religion, and copious amounts of church hurt.

I see you. He loves you.

In the season of Advent, we simultaneously look back to Christ’s first coming with celebration and forward to His second coming with anticipation.

How different our lives would be if we experienced God’s “furious love” in this way.

Manning writes, “He is the only God man has ever heard of who loves sinners…the Father of Jesus loves all, no matter what they do.”

This is the Gospel of Grace. By no merit of our own, we are loved & restored.

This is one of the issues at the heart of my book, Scales Off.

God’s Kingdom is built by the transforming power of the Spirit through sinner-saints who claim citizenship solely through the person and work of Jesus.

Not through coercion, legislation, or earthly attempts at empire building.
I wish Christians in America would worry a lot less about our nation being Christian and a lot more about our actions being Christlike.

Anyone want to play a round of “ispy overt symbols of Christian Nationalism”?

Spotted this in Gatlinburg.

So many questions (e.g., If Jesus is hugging the flag, who is on the cross? Why is his arm so tiny? What is the context of the verse to the flag?)

The “Join ICE” ads on YouTube are becoming ridiculous.

Exactly what I constantly want popping up while doing Pokemon exercise videos with my 6 year old.

Trust me feds…I’m not your target demographic on this one.

“Ring the bells. This time I mean it. Bid the hatred fare thee well. Give back the pieces of my Jesus. Send your counterfeits to hell.”

Mercy @drewholcomb.bsky.social and @johnnyswim.bsky.social

You have no idea how many times I’ve sang this song so loud I almost lost my voice.

5 ways to radically improve your communication with someone experiencing church hurt:

-Listen far more than you speak.

-Don’t tell them how to feel.

-Ask permission to offer advice before giving it.

-Avoid cheap and easy cliches.

-Resist the reflex to “fix” them.

“The true Jesus is gentle with the broken, fierce with the proud, unimpressed by human displays of dominance, and unwilling to weaponize shame. He is the shepherd who goes after the lost, not the warden who locks the gates.”

I’ve been teaching my students about the Holocaust this week. The major point that I have been stressing to them is to be aware of language and legislation that dehumanizes others.

Anytime we hear groups being described as less human than another (e.g., animals) alarms should go off in our heads.

True faithfulness doesn’t grasp for national dominance. It doesn’t rise
or fall with election cycles, nor does it demand loyalty to Presidents, parties, or platforms. Faithfulness is not measured by political victories or cultural influence, but by whether our lives reflect the heart of our
holy God.

“A lamp hidden under the banner of nationalism cannot shine. And when our witness dims, the world does not just lose respect for the church. It loses access to the Christ we were meant to reflect.”
