I think the Repub party is shallow, made up today of people of few skills who couldn't get elected on their own merit, so they need a "strongman"... a "Superman" [Nietzsche] to bring them over the line.

Red hats, flags are symbols identifying membership, kinship, loyalty to groups.
It makes sense Southerners who had ancestors who fought in the Civil War or died in it see the flag as a representation of those family members, soldiers or remembrance.
They need to find a more acceptable symbol.
