In both media, the society requires members to complete military service to earn citizenship.

This made me think of Israel, though in Israel citizens are required to do military service, so it's the other way around.

Unfortunately, the movie cut the "scrufulous toads" line xD

The movie is more satirical of the authoritarian society where the book posits and gently endorses it.

with more of a romance focus (Rico follows his girlfriend in joining the army, where in the book he follows his friend).

The book was a little bit boring... I remember it had a lot of marching where there was none in the movie.
