Inorganic chemist, crystallomancer, dad. Making MOFs since before they were called MOFs. Check out http://BraggYourPattern.com & http://elementsets.net.
Should have given it as e.g. nickel or potassium carbonate, not something alphabetically so close to copper carbonate. Student exam stress/pressure and all that.

I sometimes do this myself - start the wording from one approach, get distracted by something or by another thought in my head, then finish the sentence in a different way. The mistake was not the writing, but the proofing. Always read back what you've written (esp. exam Qs), aloud if necessary.

Needs "per dm3" taken out, then it makes sense. Also, the density of solid CuCl2 is 3386 g/dm3 not 300 (which is another way to incorrectly interpret the wording). Or is it a 300g/dm3 solution then being diluted into another 1 dm3 of water. So confusing.

Terribly written. Basically the author has changed their mind on how to word it half way through. Started off giving the concentration ("...per dm3"), but then finished by giving the mass & volume ("solid CuCl2...") so that the student calculates the conc. themselves. Needs to be one or the other.

Feels like I haven't seen a success rate like that in years. Well done everyone.

I have no idea why, but I find that genuinely hilarious. I guess they're so tied together in my mind. Brilliant.

Ultimately, MOFs part of a wider field known as ‘crystal engineering’, so yeah.

Oh, very consciously. My reaction was entirely “Well this stuff’s not going to give me a single crystal, which was the point of the experiment. It just means I’m going have to put more reactions on now.” ‘Flowers’ of crystals are always frustrating that way. Derek’s crystal, on the other hand… Wow!
