Perhaps a dumb milestone, but still amazed to see me hit the 2000 citations mark in Google Scholar. What a wild ride it's been to get to where I am!

One of my 'hobbies' it taking macro pictures of corals at night. Up close these are always beautiful, alien looking things, often with fluorescent colours. This way, you can see individual coral polyps that make up the colonies!

Pretty amazing that I can map over 500,000 m2 of reef at 0.5cm resolution in under two hours, and then spit out a digital surface model a day later. Incredible how far drone tech has come in the last decade!

I love being able to hang out with rare and threatened species at Heron Island like this Whitespotted Guitarfish. There are a few that hang around the channel at any one time, and they typically just rest on the sand.

Despite their appearances, this is not a shark but a ray!

So grateful to be able to introduce @griffith.edu.au students to one of my favourite places and some rare and fascinating species of Heron Island.

Back in paradise to teach @griffith.edu.au 3rd year marine science capstone. What a place to teach and learn marine science!

Brushturkeys are epic animals. When they decide to dig a nest, nothing stops them. At @griffith.edu.au on the Gold Coast, they've had to put signs up for vehicles because there's no way to stop it from doing its thing!

Olaf Meynecke from @griffith.edu.au talking about management and disposal of whale carcasses. We can model where these whales go using capsized boat models! Growing issue since whale populations are booming off SE Australia

There are no known cases of wind turbines leading to entangling of marine mammals. Can we stop those conversations already? If anything, turbines might act like artificial reefs with benefits!
July 16, 2025 at 6:35 AM
@sharkslikejazz.bsky.social talking about making low-cost hydrophones to study shark communication among other things!

Excited to get started for AMSA 2025!

So devastating to see these sorts of comments responding to over 90% of corals dying in one of the most pristine parts of the Great Barrier Reef. No, no matter how much scientists call out the effects of climate change, it does not magically mean we get money 🧵
July 9, 2025 at 6:06 AM
Seeing this in the water was devastating. During bleaching it was fantastical, since corals fluoresce to protect themselves. After bleaching it's like a graveyard. Image of bleaching by @krisfish.bsky.social 🧵

And simply compare maps of coral during and after bleaching. The results were bleak, with bleaching/fluorescing corals turning almost black as they die and algae cover them, making live and dead coral very easy to distinguish from a drone 🧵

You got lucky though, not sure how helpful it is

We've always assumed there was just one species of Man-of-War jellyfish (also known as Bluebottles), turns out there's at least 4 that might be found together but don't interbreed, with distinct morphologies! 🧪🦑

Ever wondered how different sawfish and sawsharks are? Here are two life-sized adults, one on top of the other. Who can actually spot the tiny sawshark? This is why I get frustrated when people confuse the two: they're hugely different animals!

Want to study jellyfish? Want to work in one of the coolest places in the world (Ningaloo)? Want to be based at an excellent uni at an excellent location (@griffith.edu.au Gold Coast)? This PhD might be just for you!

Reflecting on our work on Lizard Island this year. What an amazing, wonderful place. It's hard to find an angle where it doesn't look spectacular. That said, below the surface the coral is not in a good place. If we want to preserve these treasures, we really need to do more.

Weather really not making it easy for the @bluerobotics.bsky.social Blueboat! I certainly wouldn't want to be out there. @griffith.edu.au

One thing that's hard to capture is how big Crown of Thorns, the coral eating starfish, can get. Here's my man hand for comparison. You can imagine how much coral these beasts would consume on the daily!

See anything wrong in these images? Even though Lizard Island is very remote, there is still plastic arriving on the island constantly. Sad reminder for the state of the world in what is an otherwise beautiful place.

Australia really has one of the best voting systems in the world. Feels good doing your civic duty! Hopefully a government that shows more interest in the environment and science.
