We are delighted that the first steps to the Rights of The River Wye Charter took place this week - our sincere congratulations to Hereford Council for this bold and visionary step. The Charter was presented in a Notice of Motion by Cllr Elissa Swinglehurst and agreed by a majority of full council.🧵

Avara/Cargill are well able to pay to clean up the mess they’ve made of the Wye. It’s time that the government and regulators took serious action to control an agricultural system that is killing the Wye before our eyes.

The attendees were invited to feel the river’s love and acknowledgement for their service, to recognise her suffering, and commit to her restoration of health. The Nature Guardians were thanked for their efforts, and invited to step over the water line and into the River to connect with the Water.

Water Ceremony was held today with prominent nature lawyers at the River Wye in Hay. It was to both celebrate and find inspiration in the Wye, and to discuss the next chapter of Rights for Rivers, in response to the multiple ecological crises 🧵

This morning in Cardiff, Emma Dearnaley, Head of Legal at River Action carried water from the Severn/Afon Hafren. Lady Wye presented the lawyers with a special 'court safe' vessel, so she could attend the judicial review in person.

The Wye Ceremonial Team supported the River Severn and legal team outside Cardiff Civil Justice Court this morning. Lawyers declared their intention to embody inspiring qualities of the river they were defending, to help them in the hearing -such as clarity, flow and calm.

The Wye is a special case, not least as it is so well known & loved. In May 2023 Natural England downgraded status of the Wye to ‘Unfavourable: Declining’.
