Unlike most other mammals, manatees do not have bone marrow in their ribs and other long bones. Instead, their bones are dense and heavy, which helps them to sink below the water’s surface when they expel enough air from their lungs and control their buoyancy. savethemanatee.org/facts

Though manatees live in fresh, brackish, and saltwater, they do not drink salt water. While in saltwater environments, their intake of water occurs while eating aquatic plants, and manatees can remain in salt water for weeks at a time. Find more facts at savethemanatee.org/facts
