Overall, I felt that 2 is overall a better game than 1, but doesn’t quite cross over into being a classic. I’ll absolutely start ranking these games soon.

Fun series staples:
Cid makes his first official appearance as an npc who is of course responsible for the airship. You can ride chocobos! There are some rotating party members. A dark knight and a dragoon with the surname Highwind both make appearances as playable characters.

The dungeon designs are better than the first game but still suffers a bit from having a ton of empty rooms and no save points available.

Having said that, certain characters naturally lend themselves to being good at certain things and if you lean into that, it works pretty well while still giving the player the freedom to let Guy cast magic or Maria be a fighter.

While the levelling system adds some needed depth to the gameplay, where spells and attributes level up and there is no character level, it is a little tricky to maximize the potential of each character if you’re not a seasoned player who has played the titles in the series that come after it.

The knights are v weak to fire!
