I should clarify my position in that I just mean to say most religions hold a position of mutual respect. The silver rule is more or less built on that principle.

All 7 deadly sins in Catholic theology lead to spiritual, mental, and physical unhealth. I truly believe this. However, it isn’t my place or anyone’s place to coerce or strongnarm anyone into these beliefs.

Morality is not subjective. There are things that are good and evil. That is a universal truth. Most religions share the same tenants more or less as well as the “Golden rule”.
I agree that it is not a Christian’s place to point out the sin of other’s. But sin is sin because it leads to unhealth.

And then it goes into the antithetical nature of denying others salvation. It would be unchristian to deny others access to salvation. Excommunication would be great for these modern wignat catholics as an example - but how is any of this enforceable? Especially in a hyperindividualist society.

Absolutely not. Christianity is very wide and diverse in its nature. One would not say Protestants/Catholics/Orthodox are all in the same club. Low church Protestantism doesn’t even have any means to police itself. There is no church hierarchy.

I’d like to note that of course the inquisition did exist and was bad. Protestants in Central and Northern Europe just used the printing press to propagandize against the church.
Regardless - widely available print media at a time of unprecedented literacy is a recipe for sensationalism.

I’d imagine it’s just the amount of press it received at the time. I don’t disagree with you, I just think it’s the dissemination of information is what cemented it.

A lot of modern cliches about the Catholic Church (like the inquisition) are due to the printing press.
