The "BBC Dolphin” may sound playful, but it’s a 2007 heavy-lift ship with twin 250-ton cranes. You won’t see it through the Soo Locks often, but it’s a great reminder of the big cargo moving through our region.

Hard to imagine the conditions these crews faced while building the International Bridge. The work, the height, the weather- none of it was easy. We’re grateful for the effort that went into creating the bridge we depend on today.

A beautiful photo of the 806 ft. Hon. James L. Oberstar on the St. Marys River from a while back. She's a modern laker named for a longtime friend of Great Lakes shipping. She’s been in for some repairs recently, so sightings through the Soo Locks might be a little less frequent for now.

Happy World Kindness Day ☀️

Did you know it takes 16 locks to go from Lake Superior to the Atlantic Ocean? This is what allows freighters from across the world to travel the Great Lakes. It's also why many Great Lakes freighters don't travel the oceans. They're too large for many of the passages.

The USCG, with no available search ships, radios the Anderson requesting assistance.

C.G.: "Anderson, this is Group Soo. What is your present position?"
Anderson: "We're down here, about two miles off Parisienne Island right now... the wind is northwest forty to forty-five miles here in the bay."
November 11, 2025 at 2:01 AM
The Anderson calls again and informs the Coast Guard that they have lost the Fitzgerald both visually and on radar.
