one of the worst types of article - absolute gutter journalism - is the genre where you find a handful of random remarks on social media and then generalise it to "aussies" as a story with national stakes

from the financial counselling australia submission to the 2023 review on online gambling

the ons in its bulletin actually states outright that police recorded crime is only useful for measuring trends for certain crimes. a disclosure that isn't generally made to journalists in aus

every ad includes an encouragement to take the worst possible bet

even if the gov never bans gambling advertising, it should still prohibit advertising extreme longshot combination bets - the ones that bookmakers make the most on and bettors lose the hardest

the major companies are trying to sue these sites lol

the news corp sites run an add for hubbl whenever they do a piece about a show. there is never a disclosure that they are owned by the same company. im looking through factiva there are hundreds of examples of this since hubbl launched.

the gov's changes to the anti-siphoning list made it so women's games get identical provisions to the longstanding ones for men in the 4 football sports.

but weirdly, it left netball with just this. even though bolstering netball would given a broadcaster like sbs a leg-up.

i'm trying to imagine being the guy who is so taken in by a facial expression like this that ive become part of the reason why its so often feigned and plastered on so many videos and failing
October 19, 2025 at 12:28 AM
the way the algorithm favours this facial expression is so weird. (its clearly phony and put on too?) what does it say that its actually an effective way to get clicks?

it pulls up a review of the show that it dates to jan 2025, when the actual review was written in 2023
October 14, 2025 at 10:14 AM
us bias is mental sometimes. like this on the site metacritic. their list of shows for 2025 has a show that was released in 2023 - best interests - but was only released in the US in 2025.

the entire dating system is based on the US to the extent it produces misleading information

is most of this just mean reversion though?

with bari weiss and this guy as deputy editor it seems there’s an almost farcical attempt by the ellisons to play into antisemitic tropes about jews by taking over a media empire partially to control the narrative on israel

its sometimes useful for reasons that don't have anything to do with denial of personal aspiration, but rather because its sociologically meaningful.

the irish system seems pretty effective at reducing this measure, as well as inequality, though from a relatively high level.

some interesting things in this new oecd report about inequality of opportunity. they define this using the terms of luck egalitarianism.
