Well in this particular case, it pretty much is the latter. If you’re a rational leader of a superpower and your proxy or ally is constantly dragging you into unnecessary conflict, you’re going to have to cut off support to that proxy ASAP so that you would not have to fight a losing battle.

Depends on the navy in question, for the USN, definitely Johnston or Samuel B Roberts at the battle of Samar. For the British and Commonwealth navies, it’s gotta be HMS Glowworm off Norway or HMAS Perth at the Battle of Sunda.

I’m just ranting here, but my impression is that if a revolution is to survive, it must have the means to ensure that its lasting impact. What happened long ago in France and in other places such as the Global South shows that having a military ready to fight for it ensures a revolution’s survival.

It was the work of great generals like Napoleon and others whose work was just as vital to the survival of France’s revolution as the speeches of Robespierre or the writings of Marat. Sadly, this did have the downside that the army would be used to help overturn the republic and turn into an empire.

The First French Republic was under attack from within and from the outside in the 1790s and it could have collapsed before the royals were disposed of. It was thanks to mass mobilisation of the country and the formation of a new citizen army that allowed the new French Republic to survive.
