Furthermore, acoustic indices also reflected underlying indirect and direct drivers affecting biodiversity, for example, the vegetation density and the tree basal area. Hence, it’s not only the birds!

Using recordings from north-eastern Madagascar, we show that acoustic indices need to be understood as multi-taxa indicators. Including multiple taxa strengthened association between indices and species richness.

Inspired by a round table discussion on the usefulness of acoustic indices at the 5th World Ecoacoustic Congress in Madrid, Spain, earlier this year, we developed a conceptual framework on what acoustic indices actually reflect.
