📣 TL;DR:
Climate support is not just a psychological variable to be managed.
It is patterned through power, inequality, and fossil entanglements.
If we want structural transformation, we must confront the structures that obstruct it.

🔍 Key findings:
– Economic freedom & high emissions → lower support
– Inequality & exposure to climate hazards → higher support
– Trust in government → not a consistent predictor
– Level of democracy → lower support; overlaps with economic freedom (r > 0.60)

📊 Our approach:
We link individual survey data from the International Climate Psychology Collaboration (ICPC) with national-level indicators to predict Public Policy Acceptance (PPA):

🏛️ Background:
Research on climate policy support has focused mostly on individuals—values, attitudes, trust.
But structural forces like inequality, fossil fuel dependence, neoliberal economics or exposure to climate hazards may shape what kinds of climate action people find acceptable.

💪This is crucial for challenging Western hegemony in societal and scientific discourse and for fostering a more plural exchange on equal footing. Additionally, we plan to use part of the funds to finance translation work that we are unable to undertake ourselves.

🏹Our aim: We want to enable people with low incomes to contribute to the book. To provide compensation for their efforts, we have launched a crowdfunding campaign. Our goal is to mitigate financial inequalities and provide financial support to authors with limited economic resources.

📖In this book, we aim to present diverse approaches that demonstrate how psychology can evolve to find answers to the multiple (ecological) crises of the present. We especially want to give a voice to authors who are not heard enough in academic discourse, such as those from the Global South.

Because it is not critical enough. What does critical mean and how do we achieve a critical psychology? These questions will be addressed by the book, which will be published in September 2024 by Psychosozial-Verlag.

🌎The world is facing multiple crises, for which we urgently need psychological expertise to address. So far, (environmental) psychology has not contributed as much to socio-ecological transformation as would be possible and necessary. Why?
