Recently, the USCGC Bertholf (WMSL-750) and the USCGC Healy (WAGB 20) met at sea near Unimak Pass, Alaska.
Bertholf, who served as Captain-Commandant of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and Commodore during the First World War, is best known for leading the 1897 Alaska Overland Expedition, a daring winter rescue of over two hundred stranded whalers. This courageous mission earned him a gold medal and demonstrated his commitment to the safety of those in peril in the Arctic. He also played a key role in establishing the U.S. Coast Guard and founded the International Ice Patrol, enhancing maritime safety in Arctic waters. Captain Healy, commanding the legendary cutter Bear, became a prominent figure along Alaska's coastline, enforcing federal laws and providing humanitarian aid to indigenous populations and stranded sailors. He also introduced reindeer from Siberia to support native communities facing declining wildlife populations. Healy's exceptional seamanship and dedication to the region earned him a heroic reputation in Arctic history.
